Reflection

God chooses individual men and women and calls each of them by name.  He leads them into the desert and there he speaks to their hearts. ...By his Spirit, he transforms them constantly leading them more deeply into his love in order to send them out on mission.

From the Principal

Dear Parents

I am pleased to announce to you that the College Captains for 2010 have been appointed:

They are Natalie Guillon and Jacob Diamond.

Natalie and Jacob were selected from a very high quality field of contenders for this role.

I have every confidence that they will be wonderful student leaders for their peers and excellent ambassadors for the College community as a whole.

I congratulate them on your behalf.

With best wishes

Bernie Boss, Principal

Year 7 Students Recognised in National Trust Competition

Year 7 students Isabelle Flynn and Ava McEwan were selected from over 300 other entrants for major awards at this year’s National Trust Photo and Story Competition.

Ava was awarded the Highly Commended prize in the Year 4-7 category for her imaginative piece The Tree of Memories, while Isabelle took out top honours for her haunting tale Memories of the Past about a nine year old ghost, which won overall First Prize in the competition.  The girls were presented with their awards at a ceremony last Thursday, where Ava was given a signed copy of Lighthouse Girl by Dianne Wolper and Isabelle collected her first prize of a digital camera.  Newman College was the only school to have more than one finalist in the competition.

As part of the competition, Isabelle and Ava were required to use both their creative writing and photography skills to demonstrate how they valued heritage in their local environment.  Isabelle was motivated to write her piece following a walk in a Swan Valley pioneer cemetery in which she found the grave of a nine year old child, who inspired the character of Maxwell Ferguson in her story.

Ava based her story on a special connection between a young girl and the natural word after snapping a beautiful photo of an enormous, ancient tree submerged by a pool of water in Ellenbrook.

The girls’ stories can be read by clicking on the following links: Isabelle Flynn ( 160Kb)  Ava McEwan ( 975Kb)

Congratulations to Isabelle and Ava on their awards.

Parents’ Auxiliary Disco

Last Friday night the annual Student Disco organised by the Parents’ Auxiliary was held at the Marian Campus hall. The children all had a wonderful time dancing and bopping to the music.  The Auxiliary are to be congratulated for all the work they did in preparation for the Disco.  Thanks must also go to the many parents who supported the organising group to ensure that children had an enjoyable evening.

Pictured above are Year 1 Red students Josh Timmings, Mia Fracaro, Alyssa Spinella & Tahlia Harvie.  Thank you to Cristina Spinella for providing the photo.

Lavalla Campus Orientation

This week parents of current Year 2 and 3 students received information about the Orientation morning, which will be held at Lavalla Campus on Friday 13 November.  The Auxiliary will once again be organising morning tea for all the parents.  Your help with donations of plates of morning tea will be greatly appreciated.

The Auxiliary have also asked for some parents to help with the set up of morning tea on each of the Orientation days.  If you are able to help, then please contact Cindy at mccullough@live.com.au

Marian Campus Orientation

Marian Campus Orientation for Kindy 2010 families and all other families new to the Campus will take place on Friday 20 November. Donations of morning tea will again be accepted from all our very generous families, as will offers to help set up the morning tea.   Please contact Cindy at mccullough@live.com.au if you are able to assist.

Thank You! Morning Tea

A special ‘thank you’ morning tea will be held from 11.00am-12.00pm on Wednesday 25 November to enable staff and students to express their gratitude to all the parents who have so generously volunteered their time in any capacity on either of the Primary campuses over the past year.  A great number of events take place each year which would not be possible without the support of parents.

The morning tea will be held in the Marian Campus hall.  A flyer containing further details and a return slip to assist with catering will be sent home next Monday.

Pets on Campus

Although many of us feel that our pets are part of the family, parents are asked to leave their furry family members at home when coming to school.  There are some adults and children who are either allergic to or frightened of pets, particularly dogs, and by preventing the possibility of any incidents occurring we can avoid anyone being hurt or upset.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Parents and Friends Meeting

The final P & F meeting for the year will be held on at 7.30pm Monday 16 November at Lavalla Campus.  All are welcome to attend.

Jocelyn Hansen, Head of Primary

Exams and Study

This week saw the commencement of the TEE exams, which for the main part are being conducted in our College Chapel.  Early feedback from students who have already participated in these exams is that the exams have been a fair and reasonable representation of what they have studied.  These exams continue now for a period of weeks and we offer our ongoing prayer support for the students participating in them.

Year 11 students will soon find themselves engaged in their own set of exams.  The Curriculum Council has clearly sounded an increased emphasis on the role of examinations in the new Courses of Study.  The new change for 2010 requires students who are studying Stage 2 or Stage 3 courses to sit the external Curriculum Council WACE exam (formerly TEE).   This applies to all students regardless of their intent to study at university or not.

In the past, students who were studying TEE subjects but not intending to go to university could choose whether or not to sit the TEE exam without any penalty. The focus of the new WACE exams is to validate all school based learning, assessment and grading.

I met with all of the Year 10 students this week as part of the second phase of developing their study skills.  Following the Semester 1 examinations, Year 10 students provided feedback that indicated they recognised the need to begin their study program earlier and the need to study for longer periods of time.  The feedback provided by the students indicated that on average, Year 10 students only studied for 30 minutes per day and they only began their preparation for the exams two weeks prior to their commencement.  For a student to be successful in Year 10, the College recommends that they complete approximately 2 hours study each day and that revision and preparation for exams is an ongoing process.  All Year 10 students had the opportunity to participate in a workshop that highlighted methods to determine what needed to be studied and how to study it.  This information will be consolidated further in classes during the forthcoming week and parents are encouraged to discuss these new study techniques with their child.

Due to the scheduling of the College Awards Night, it has been necessary to bring the commencement of the Year 10 exams forward by one day.  These exams will now be held from Monday 23 November to Thursday 26 November.

I take this opportunity to wish all students well in their forthcoming exams.

Rob Crothers, Acting Head of Secondary

Arts on Tour 2010 - Expression of Interest

A tour to Melbourne and Sydney is planned for the 2010 Term 1 Holidays (Monday 5 to Tuesday 13 April).

It is open to students enrolled in either Year 11/12 Art or Drama in 2010.

The objectives of the tour focus on immersing students in Australian cultural activities designed to benefit them in their Upper School studies. Visits to traditional and contemporary galleries and theatres, cultural hubs, the Melbourne Comedy Festival, workshops with artists and theatre groups, and viewing theatrical productions are just part of the Arts on Tour program.

Any student interested in being part of this exciting opportunity needs to see Mrs Mandy Keeling in Administration for an Arts on Tour Expression of Interest form.

If there are sufficient numbers to proceed with the Tour, an information evening will be organised and advertised.

Please note that the tour organisers have the right to ensure the Tour runs smoothly and to that end, students will be pre-selected to attend based on their prior interests, commitments and behaviour.

Curtin Uni Visits Science Students

Two students from Curtin University visited the College last Thursday to demonstrate a number of exciting experiments for Newman Science students.  Topics covered included thermo-dynamics, magnetism, sound waves, resistance, electricity, and, most excitingly of all, the effects of extreme cold on cells using liquid nitrogen.

Students watched a rose shatter into pieces on a desk; saw theories regarding electricity put into practice; and witnessed the consequences of swallowing liquid nitrogen on the human diaphragm by way of a stand-in balloon.

A great time was had by all.

Japan Trip 2009

The Japan Tour was a truly amazing experience. The first week in Tokyo consisted of visits to temples, Tokyo Dome (the home of baseball and international concerts), riding the Thunder Dolphin rollercoaster (with a drop that has to be seen to be believed!) and, best of all, Tokyo Disneyland.  During this first week, we stayed in a traditional Japanese inn called a ryokan, whilst experiencing the best that modern Japan has to offer.

The second week was spent in Kyoto, with trips to a number of different cities, including Osaka and Hiroshima, via the bullet train. We went to many different temples and shrines, stayed in a Western style hotel and the shopping opportunities were more than ample. The fashion in Osaka was nothing short of amazing! Visiting Hiroshima and the Atomic Bomb Dome, however, was a very sobering experience. For the second week, we were in modern accommodation, whilst experiencing the best that traditional Japan has to offer.

Every person on the Japan Tour, including the teachers and supervisors, Mrs Belinda Fogliani and Mr Christian Gerrish, agreed that they could not wait to go back to Japan someday and have another opportunity to savour the fabulous culture that is so unique to the country.

Remar Red Camp

On 8 October, twenty Year 10 students participating in Remar with Mr Tom Gourlay and Miss Lauranne Backes (Red helm), journeyed to Marcellin College in Melbourne to participate in Remar’s annual Red Leadership Camp.   We were soon joined by other Red Caravels from all over Australia.  All together our Caravel got to meet around two hundred and fifty new people.

On the camp we were able to socialise with everyone and participate in different team building activities, as well as leadership skills, and develop our faith further.  We were able to showcase our talented Newman College students on the final evening in the talent show, where they had a stand out performance.  We were able to stay an extra evening and day in Melbourne to explore the different sites.  The aquarium was impressive and most students did very well with their shopping and went home broke.  Overall it was a fantastic experience for all and an excellent learning experience for the Remar Red students.

Dressing Up and Reaching Out for Halloween

Among the covens of witches, wizards and scary fairies flitting around the neighbourhoods on Saturday evening was a group of Year 7s and 8s from Newman College.  Halloween was a good excuse to dress up and get together for a giggle, a spot of 'trick or treating' and a barbecue dinner once the sun set.  Georgi Garvey, Andrea Sitas, Ellie Ryan, Mathilda Connell, Sophia Jones, Anna Bourke, Mitchell Price-Norgaard and James French came home with a good supply of 'loot' and had a lot of laughs along the way.

Sweet treats aside; everyone agreed that the best part of the evening was providing a bright spot of entertainment for the people they visited. The children were especially moved by an 88 year old gentleman with a sick wife, who said he'd been waiting for a trick-or-treat visit for years - and they were his first.

As Georgi’s mum Marianne Garvey commented, “It just goes to show that the opportunity to reach out to others with Christian goodwill can present itself in many different guises.”

Pictured above are (front) Georgi Garvey, Sophia Jones, Ellie Ryan, and (back) Mitchell Price-Norgaard, Anna Bourke, Andrea Sitas and James French. (Mathilda Connell was running in an 800m event that afternoon, so revved her broomstick and joined the others a bit later.)

Year 7 Swimmer to Compete in Pan Hellenic Games

Congratulations, Geordi, and best of luck for the Games.
