Parent Groups

Newman parents are renowned for their sense of community and the College encourages and values their participation in a wide variety of activities.  Many aspects of life at the College could not exist without the strong and active support of parents.  The College Council, Parents and Friends Association, Friends of Music and Parents Auxiliary provide the formal structure for this involvement. There are also opportunities for the support of teachers, the libraries, canteens as well as participation in the annual Arts Festival, the Music Program and a variety of other sporting, cultural and social pursuits. All these activities are important in the development of our students and are essential to Newman College being a vibrant community.

College Council
The College Council comprises a minimum of eight and a maximum of thirteen members constituted as follows: the Principal of Newman College, a Governor’s nominee, up to six parents of students enrolled at the College at the time of nomination, other persons appointed by the Governor for a particular expertise and experience upon recommendation by the Council, nominated members from significant groups (as determined by the Principal) within the School community.  The Newman College Council is accountable to the Marist Brothers, Melbourne Province, and exercises the authority of the Governor within the terms of reference determined by the Governor.  The Governor is the Provincial of the Marist Brothers, Melbourne Province.

Parents and Friends (K-6)
The Parents and Friends group meets regularly on a monthly basis and undertakes fundraising for the Primary section as well as organises dinner dances and quiz nights.

The Auxiliary is a very dedicated group willing to assist the College in any way but particularly in catering for the many functions, meetings and courses held throughout the year.

Friends of Music
Friends of Music supports the Music Program. As well as being a very friendly and social group, Friends of Music also works hard to promote and further the musical interests of the College. Friends of Music works in close contact with the Music Department in many ways, including cataloguing music, providing other administrative assistance and fundraising to defray the cost of tours, as well as provide additional resources.

The Friends of Music awards bursaries annually to students at the College.

Arts Festival
Newman College has a long tradition of holding an Arts Festival on an annual basis.  The exhibition features the display of high quality work of local and national artists of renown.

In recent years the Festival ‘weekend’ has evolved into a celebration of the life of the College as a whole; encompassing Open Days and the coming together of families of the School for a Family Fun Day.

Newman Sports Association
The Association was formed in 1985 and comprises eight sporting clubs inviting participation from not only Newman College students, feeder school students, past students, but membership from the wider community.

The Association adds a vibrant, dynamic extension to the sporting life of the School.
