Curriculum

The Archdiocesan Religious Education Learning Area Statement and Progress Maps form the basis of classroom Religious Education.

The Chaplain for the Primary school, Parish Priest of the Floreat/Wembley Parish Fr Wayne Davis, is a regular figure about the Primary campuses.  He supports the classroom teachers in the Religious Education programs including the Sacramental Programs and celebrating weekly Liturgies at each of the campuses.  Liturgical celebrations and prayer are central to the whole community.

The Curriculum Framework is the basis of all teaching and learning programs at Newman College.

The College is committed to the continual improvement of both teaching and learning practice. In 2004, the staff adopted the RAISe (Raising Achievement in Schools) Program which emphasises best practice in pedagogy.  Although the main emphasis of this Program initially was in Literacy achievement, this process has now also part of the Numeracy Program.  Each class has timetabled a dedicated Literacy block, of at least 4 days a week, to ensure Literacy has a constant focus.  In 2008, as Numeracy is also a very important part of the daily program, a dedicated  Numeracy block was instituted and is timetabled at least 4 days a week, in classes - Pre Primary to Year 6.  The students have access to a wide variety of numeracy resources and opportunities.

The RAISe approach has the potential, over time, to apply across all learning areas.

Academic Enrichment is encouraged throughout the classes.  In addition to this daily practice, Enrichment classes are held weekly for students across Pre Primary to Year 6, who have attained the set criteria in a number of well renowned assessments.

Visual Art Enrichment classes are for students in Year 6.  These students are selected by the Visual Arts teacher to explore creative practices within their area of interest.

Physical Education and sport are important aspects of the curriculum at Newman College.  The wonderful facilities are widely used and enjoyed by all the students and the wider community.

The Arts Learning Area is strongly supported at Newman College in a variety of forms.  The students engage formally in classroom Music and Visual Arts, beginning in Pre Primary. At the annual Newman College Arts Festival the students proudly display their art work for all to admire their many talents.

Students have the opportunity to join weekly Ballet classes conducted at the College through the Perth School of Ballet.

Both campuses have very well resourced libraries, with highly trained library staff, supporting both the individual interests of the students and the programs offered in the classrooms.  The library staff work closely with the classroom teachers to ensure the best quality integration for the students is offered.
