Year 7
In 2009 Year 7 students at Newman College were located for the first time on the Marcellin Campus and a Years 7-9 Middle School structure was established. In 2008 extensive renovations were carried out to provide an excellent, purpose built learning environment appropriate to meeting the particular needs of the Year 7 students (pictured right).
This change has come about as a result of several factors. One of these is the change of entry age into formal schooling for Western Australian children that occurred in 2001. This will bring Newman students more in line with educational practice in the Eastern States.
Research has indicated that young adolescents learn most effectively if curriculum and pedagogy are targeted towards their specific needs. A Middle School structure provides a more efficient means of meeting these needs. A particular pedagogical approach and access to a wider range of facilities enables a more diverse, varied curriculum to be developed for these students.
The curriculum that is offered is based on meeting the specific needs of the Year 7 cohort in the manner which engages and retains their enthusiasm for learning. In addition it provides for an efficient and effective planned transition from Primary to Senior Secondary schooling.
